12 Classic Cover Songs

Just wanted to put a list of some great cover songs together for listening and viewing pleasure. This is by no means a ‘best of’ list. It’s just some great cover songs that you should check out and would probably enjoy. The music cover a wide range of styles and talents. So if you’re open to something new, give these tracks a listen.

Exodus – Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap) – Original by AC/DC – Playing AC/DC on guitar is an easy thing. However, a band being faithful to an AC/DC song is a completely different story. Exodus does such a great job of putting their own stamp on this track but is still faithful to the original.

Walking On The Moon – Sly & Robbie – Original by The Police – From the Compilation ‘Reggatta Mondatta: Reggae Tribute to Police’ which is an amazing Reggae compilation of Police songs by some of the top Reggae artists in the world.

Grateful Dead – Big River – Original by Johnny Cash – #1 on my list of the best Johnny Cash cover songs ever. Just a great version that has a backbone of country but yet is still a classic Dead song.

Nine Inch Nails w/Gary Newman – Cars – Original by Gary Newman – This is technically not a cover but I have yet to find a version of this song that ROCKS as hard as this version.

Iron Maiden – Cross-Eyed Mary – Original by Jethro Tull – Iron Maiden doesn’t do cover songs that often if at all. However, this B-Side from the ‘Piece of Mind’ sessions makes people wish they did do more covers. A very faithful version of the Jethro Tull classic.

Stone Temple Pilots – Dancing Days – Led Zeppelin – Great Band. Great cover.

Primus – Have a Cigar – Original by Pink Floyd – Les Claypool of Primus has a long standing love of all things Pink Floyd and it shows in this amazing cover.

Phish and Kid Rock – ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and ‘We’re an American Band’ – Original by AC/DC and Grand Funk Railroad – I’m willing to bet that Kid Rock wishes he wrote this song as it’s made for him.

Phish and Wynonna Judd – Free Bird – Original by Lynyrd Skynyrd – Not a fan of Wynonna but she just KILLS it in this song.

Metallica – The Wait – Original by Killing Joke – If this song can’t get your blood flowing then you might be dead. I’ve never been able to drive under 90 MPH when this song is playing in my car.

Flaming Lips – Borderline – Original by Madonna – A Flaming Lips cover done only the way the Flaming lips could do it.

Pearl Jam – Whip It – Original by Devo – Boatloads of Awesome.

The reason why is I found a website that has up-to-date Open Mic information in and around phoenix. Rather than duplicating our efforts, I’m going to put the link up for everyone to check out!

Once I get situated, I’m going to get back into performing live and leveraging this site to find places to go and jam:

Ok, so by now you’ve downloaded some pretty cool music from Nine Inch Nails, especially ‘The Slip’.  Ok so now that you have a new album you just released to the masses what’s next if you’re Nine Inch Nails?

Why you go on Tour, of course.

Nine Inch Nails announced their ‘Lights in the Sky over North America 2008′.

(More info here)

http://tour.nin.com/

As a preview of what’s to come on this tour, Nine Inch Nails released a free EP of (legal) downloadable music that contains samples of every band that will be joining Nine Inch Nails on tour.

The bands that will part of this tour are:

A place to bury strangers
Does it offend you, yeah?
Crystal castles
Deerhunter
nine inch nails (duhh)

To get your own copy of this EP follow the link below:

As an additional bonus here’s some cool videos from their tour rehersals:

To continue the story…so Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor experimented with a revolutionary method of releasing his music to the masses and without the involvement of the record companies with his Ghosts I-IV album.  Not too long after that (around May) he decided to release his next album, The Slip, for free via the internet as a thank you to his fans.  Personally, I think to release this album in this manner (for free over the internet) is a ballsy move….and it’s paying off for him.

To get your own copy of ‘The Slip’ just follow this link:

http://theslip.nin.com/

Here’s the first Video from ‘The Slip’ called ‘Discipline’.

If you have been living under a rock as of late you don’t know the ground breaking work that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has done with his music.  Recently out of his contract with Interscope records he began to experiment with ways to release music on the internet.  His first release was Ghosts I-IV.  This is a selection of 36 instrumental tracks that are not only optimized in the most original manner in Apple’s iTunes but it comes with a whole bunch of cool stuff and extras.  The amount of extras depends on how much you spend.

You have many different options to choose from.  Here’s the ordering page:

http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options

…as you can see you can get tracks for free, for $5, or if you want to spend more you can get additional goodies at the $10 and $75 levels.

If you want to get a sample of what the album is all about, you can listen to Ghosts I-IV in it’s entirety.

http://ghosts.nin.com/main/player

Tomorrow, I’ll post links to his new album that can be downloaded legally for free.
