Tip Sheet

10 Most common myths about going out to spend your Free time in Phoenix

1) Everyone Stays home because it’s too hot out in the Summer time – That may be the case some of the time but not all of the time.  Most of the time people don’t have that ‘go to’ guide that they know can give them the details, every day of the week, of where to go around the Greater Phoenix Area.

2) There’s nothing for people my age (21-40) to do around town. All there are is Art and stuff for Kids and Senior Citizens. – Wow!  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  There is so much to do around the valley that is fun and, for the most part, inexpensive.  It’s just that no one knows how to find the fun stuff to do for people their own age!

3) I can’t afford to go out – Well, if you’re used to spending over $100 everytime you go out, I can see not being able to afford to go out. However, all around the valley there is so much fun stuff to do. The great thing about this is that most of it is VERY inexpensive!

4) I can’t go by myself to events – Yes you can! Ignore that voice inside of you telling you that! Many events around town are designed for single people to go to. For example, Swing and Salsa Dancing with lessons beforehand are explicitly designed not only for couples but for singles as well. Who knows, you might be pared up with someone you may start a great relationship with!

5) I have to work tomorrow – So does everyone else. Having to work tomorrow is not an excuse to stay inside and do nothing. Get out! Live a little! The people you meet or see at events around the greater Phoenix area more than likely have to work the next day as well. They are out having fun as should you!

6) I won’t know anyone there – Are you expecting to know everyone where ever you go? If you sit at home and do nothing you may miss the opportunity of a lifetime!

7) I can do more fun things in Vegas/LA/San Diego – Ok I will admit that Los Angeles and San Diego have the advantage of having beaches over Phoenix. Other than that, the Phoenix area has just as many more fun things to do around town, if not more, that won’t burn a hole in your pocketbook. Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas can’t make that claim!

8) The only way to find people to date/a Significant other is at the Clubs – Totally untrue! As a wise man once said ‘You find them in a club, you will lose them in a club’. What does this mean? I don’t know. (Just kidding) If you are sincerely looking for a quality significant other in your life, do you really think you are going to find them in a club? Uhhhh, no.

7 Reasons why you shouldn’t go to a Movie in your free time

1) Given how bad some movies are today, chances are the movie you want to go to will be on video by the time you get home -  Why waste your hard earned money on a movie when you can spend the same amount of money (sometimes less) on a ticket to a Diamondbacks game, or go to Karaoke Night?

2) You can see a movie anytime – Some events that go on around town may only happen once.  There is a reason why first run movies have multiple screenings over many weeks or DVD’s stay on rental shelves for a long time.  You can go and watch them whenever you want.  If you see a one time event coming to town (like a concert), why go see a movie?

3) You spend the same amount of money or more on a movie ticket when you buy food from the concession stands – Why spend all that money on a movie, stale pop corn and the ‘Bladder Buster’ size of soda when you can spend, in many cases, much much less going out and seeing an open mic or salsa dancing?

4) If you take a date to a movie, you spend 2 or so hours of valuable date time not talking to them -

5) Who wants to go to a movie by themselves?

7 Reasons why you should go see live music in Phoenix

1) Because most of today’s hasn’t resonated with consumers as it did in the past – Sad but true. Why not check out new bands and see if you can find something new that nobody knows about yet.

2) You might get to see the ‘next best thing’ get their start – I used to live in Seattle in the 90’s and a friend told me to go see a band that was named ‘Mookie Blaylock’ but had to change their name for legal reasons. I saw that band in person before their first album came out and it was one of the best shows I had ever seen. Who is the Band you ask? None other than Pearl Jam. The same thing can happen in Phoenix!

3) You just might become a fan of the band you go to see – I can’t remember how many shows I went to of bands I didn’t like but went anyways because my friends were.

4) Festival Concerts! – If you go to a festival type concert. It’s a great way to find new styles of music and new artists you may have never heard of.

5) A great way to meet people who share a common interest with you – Talking about common musical interests is a great conversation starter. Who knows you might meet a new friend, find some new musical bands/artists to listen to

6) It’s an excuse to shake your booty – You want to shake your booty to some great music. Admit it.

7) The Local Music Scene needs your support! – There’s a great music scene in Phoenix yet no one knows about it. Get out and support the local bands! Who knows? You may be going to see them at US Air Arena or Jobing.com arena before too long.

Why Fun things to do are so hard to find in Phoenix

1) Because everyone thinks all there is to do is go to the clubs or go drinking
2) Because all the resources to find things to do are overrun with events that are for older people or families.
3) People don’t know what fun is in this the Phoenix Area
4) People don’t know where to look for fun things to do in the Phoenix area
5) Because there aren’t any resources dedicated to just going out or having fun.
6) Because the majority of the published events in the media are related to Art, Clubbing, or Family events
7) Because nobody looks for fun things to do!

8 Reasons why Dinner & (Choose one) Drinks/a Movie/Clubbing are lame dates/things to do

1) Because you can’t talk to your date in the middle of a movie
2) Because you can’t carry on a conversation while eating dinner
3) Why would anyone want to spend 2 hours watching someone eat?
4) The only thing you get a chance to connect with is your food
5) It shows you lack originality and spontaneity. – If you’re trying to impress a potential SO taking them out for Dinner and Drinks/a Movie/Dancing shows you won’t be able to come up with something original say a year down the road.
6) Just because your friends take their dates out to Dinner &… that does not mean they know what a good date consists of.
7) How can you carry on a conversation in a club?
8) Why would you take a date to a club?

10 Reasons why you should go see a Professional Sporting event in Phoenix

1) The teams need your support – Even if the teams are winning, they still need your support. Teams get an added boost on the court/field/ice when the home team crowd makes it difficult for the opposing team to play.

2) Learn something new – If you don’t know anything about a given sport, it’s a great chance to learn a new sport. If you don’t know the difference between a Hostess Ding Dong and a Hockey puck well it’s a great time to check out a Phoenix Coyotes game. If you can’t tell the difference between a Home Run and a Touchdown, perhaps it’s time to take in an Arizona Diamondback game and Arizona State Sundevils/Arizona Cardinals home game and learn which term applies to which sport.

3) FREE GIVEAWAYS! – With the exception of the Suns and the Cardinals, pro teams have great giveaways at many of the events in a given season. Not cheap stuff but quality stuff. For example…

The Arizona Diamondbacks offer the following promotions this season:
- Post Game Fireworks
- Caps
- T-Shirts

The Phoenix Coyotes have offered the following promotions:
- Blankets
- Shirts
- Caps
- Todd McFarlane figures

4) Free Food included in Ticket Prices – Some teams have All-you-can-eat Ticket packages that can cut down the cost of going to a game. The Phoenix Coyotes have an All-you-can-eat ticket package designed to help lower the costs of going to sporting events.

5) There are no bad Pro Teams in Phoenix any more – With the exception of the Suns, the three of the four major sports teams in the Phoenix Area are not championship caliber yet but they are more than worth the price of admission.

6) You get to see some great players up close and personal – Granted, this depends on having seats close to the action.  That said, there’s nothing better than getting experience the action up close and personal as well as getting to hear and experience moments that TV or radio broadcasts just can’t capture.  Getting to hear what exactly is being said to an umpire at an Arizona Diamondbacks game by a player when the Ump makes a horrible strike three call or being able to hear players talk strategy on the bench at a Phoenix Coyotes game.

7) There are great places to go before the game – In the Case of The Phoenix Coyotes and the Arizona Cardinals, the Westgate City Center is designed to give fans an excuse to come early to the game, stay after the game and come back when there isn’t a game going on.

8) You get to meet fans who share a common interest with you – What better way to have fun at a game than share the ups and downs throughout the course of a game or a season.  Nothing better than sharing the moment the home team scores with other passionate fans around you.

9) It’s a great place to take a date – Granted, this doesn’t apply if you are in range of a flying puck or a foul ball but if you sit far away enough from the action, going to games can give you a great chance to see if the person you are dating is a great match or not.

10) Because its fun!
