Spring Training is just around the corner as is the on sale ticket date for the brand new Salt River Fields, the new Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Spring Training tickets go on sale to the general public Monday January 17th at 10 AM Arizona time.

However, starting on Friday January 14th at 10 am Arizona Time to Sunday January 16th at 10 PM Arizona Time, the Diamondbacks will have pre-sale tickets available to all who use the password to the pre-sale event.

D-Backs Fan Fest returns in February

The Arizona Diamondbacks will host the seventh annual D-backs FanFest on Feb. 12 to the general public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chase Field. The free event will include autographs and photograph sessions with current players, coaches, alumni and broadcasters on the field at Chase Field.

D-backs players slated to attend include Brandon Allen, Geoff Blum, Sam Demel, Stephen Drew, Barry Enright, David Hernandez, John Hester, Daniel Hudson, Kelly Johnson, Ian Kennedy, Kam Mickolio, Miguel Montero, Melvin Mora, Kevin Mulvey, Xavier Nady, Jordan Norberto, Joe Paterson, J.J. Putz, Ryan Roberts, Joe Saunders, Konrad Schmidt, Daniel Stange, Brian Sweeney, Justin Upton, Chris Young and Zach Duke. Coaches participating include manager Kirk Gibson, hitting coach Don Baylor, pitching coach Charles Nagy, bullpen coach Glenn Sherlock, bench coach Alan Trammell, third base coach Matt Williams and first base coach Eric Young. Broadcasters Tom Candiotti, Mark Grace, Jeff Munn, Miguel Quintana, Greg Schulte, Oscar Soria and Daron Sutton will also be in attendance as well as Luis Gonzalez and other former D-backs players. All participants are subject to change without notice.

Autograph sessions with D-backs personnel will require a $5 donation to the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and will be limited in quantity. Players will also participate in photo sessions free of charge. A special area will be available for children 12 and under to receive free autographs.

ASU CB Omar Bolden returning for senior season

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University cornerback Omar Bolden, after consulting with family members, the ASU coaching staff and the National Football League, has decided to remain in school and play his senior season in 2011.

“I’ve built special relationships with these guys on the team,” said Bolden. “Not only are they teammates, but I see these guys as family. I wanted to finish that with them. I feel like I started something with them here and I feel like I need to finish it with my guys. I feel like we can be very special this upcoming season.”

Bolden, who was one of only four unanimous selections for the 2010 All-Pacific-10 Conference First-Team as selected by the league’s coaches, had spent the last month in fact-gathering mode while mulling a decision to declare for early entry to the 2011 NFL Draft.

“My family and I talked in great depth about weighing the pros and cons of leaving school early,” said Bolden. “I started off by thanking everyone in the beginning and I’d like to thank my coaches again. They have been very supportive through the whole decision making process. It was obvious that they wanted the best for me. They were going to support me in either decision I made. I’m just fortunate to be around a great coaching staff.”

Bolden, from Ontario, California, led ASU with three interceptions for 85 yards and one touchdown and collected 52 tackles, including 37 solo stops, in 2010. Bolden added three tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble. He also returned 11 kickoffs for 321 yards and a 29.2-yard average. He returned one 97 yards for a touchdown against Wisconsin. For his special teams play, Bolden also was named Second-Team All-Pac-10 Conference in 2010 as a kickoff return specialist.

In March of 2010 Bolden was granted an additional year of eligibility for the Sun Devil football team, as his medical hardship petition was approved by the Pac-10. Bolden missed almost the entire 2009 season due to injury.

“I’m ready to bring that Pac-12 Championship back to Tempe. I’m ready to set it off right for the 2011 season.”

Wind conditions are creating some very rideable waves. Jet skiers will love the conditions for tricks and whatnot as the SW swells will make for some very jump-able waves.

AM Report: Rain will slow down to a 30% chance but the winds will make for a very gnarly surf in the morning. Bring your wetsuits as the water will be cold in the morning.

ASU Cancels ASU/Marist Womens Baskteball game

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona State-Marist women’s basketball game originally scheduled for noon MT on Tues., Dec. 28 in Tempe, Ariz., has been canceled.

Earlier today the game was moved to Wed., Dec. 29 after it was determined that Marist would be unable to travel because of winter storms back East. However it was later concluded that the possibility of Marist being able to arrive in time for a game on Dec. 29 was also in doubt.

Wednesday was the latest possible date ASU could play because it opens Pacific-10 Conference play on Friday when it hosts Oregon State at 6:30 p.m.

There is no word on whether the teams will attempt to play the game later this season.

Fans who purchased tickets for the ASU-Marist game can use them at either of this weekend’s games: vs. Oregon State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. or vs. Oregon on Sunday at 2 p.m.

2010 event produced history-making 94-point ride by Jenkins

GLENDALE, Ariz. – You won’t need your whole seat … just the edge … when the Professional Bull Riders bring the Top 40 bull riders and the fiercest bucking bulls in the world to Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz., on March 12 & 13, 2011.

Fans in Glendale witnessed history in 2010 when L.J. Jenkins of Porum, Okla., became only the second man ever to ride Voodoo Child. Jenkins scored 94 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round to leapfrog four other riders and win the event. The score was the highest posted in the nationally-televised Built Ford Tough Series season.

Bull riding begins at 6:50 p.m. on March 12, and at 5 p.m. on March 13. Tickets are available at the Jobing.com Arena box office, online at www.Ticketmaster.com, and by telephone at (480) 784-4444.

Fans will be able to experience two rounds of 8-second rides and jaw-dropping wrecks as the world’s best bull riders try to stay on animals 10 times their size. The scores from Saturday and Sunday will be combined, and the Top 10 riders will advance to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday, where they will compete with one more bull. The rider with the highest total score after the championship round will be the winner.

Glendale is the 10th of 28 stops on the 2011 BFTS schedule. The season opens at world-famous Madison Square Garden on Jan. 7-9. It ends Oct. 26-30 in Las Vegas with the PBR World Finals, where the 2011 PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded a $1 million bonus.

The BFTS is televised every week on VERSUS with select events being shown on NBC and CBS. Beginning in 2011, the telecasts will be produced by the PBR which has hired

D-Backs and Rockies release inaugural Salt River Fields Spring Training schedule

This week, the Arizona Diamondbacks, in conjunction with the Colorado Rockies and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, have released the Spring Training schedule for the inaugural season of the Salt River Fields.

General admission lawn seating that will hold 4,000 people will be $8 and tickets for 7,000 reserved seats in the seating bowl will range from $15-$25. More specifically, ticket prices for games at Salt River Fields are: Infield Box $25, Dugout Reserve $21, Infield Reserve $20, Party Decks $19, Baseline Reserve $15 and Lawn $8.

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community members and D-backs and Rockies season-ticket holders can purchase season-ticket plans for Spring Training games at Salt River Fields exclusively up to Dec. 4. Season-ticket plans for the each team’s home schedule at Salt River Fields and all 33 Cactus League games at Salt River Fields will go on sale to the public beginning on Dec. 6.

Individual game tickets for all 33 games at Salt River Fields will go on sale beginning at 10 a.m. (MST) on Jan 17. Tickets can be purchased in person at the D-backs Ticket Office at Chase Field, at dbacks.com/spring, coloradorockies.com/spring or by calling 888.490.0383 or 480.362.WINS (9467).

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks had a busy day today announcing a bunch of news from all levels of their organization. Most of the news will something Diamondbacks fans will want to read.

First of the Arizona Diamondbacks in conjunction with the Colorado Rockies and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community announced ticket prices for their inaugural spring training in 2011.

“Consistent with our pricing for regular-season games at Chase Field, D-backs’ Spring Training games at Salt River Fields will be affordable for families to endure the finest fan experience throughout the Cactus League next year,” said D-backs’ President & CEO Derrick Hall. “The ballpark is designed to offer plenty of shade for fans in the reserved seating bowl while also having the largest lawn seating area in the Cactus League for fans wanting to watch a game from a more casual point of view. The entire facility will provide an interactive fan-friendly experience to get close to the players as they prepare for the 2011 season.”

Next, the D-Backs announced they have signed infielder Jeff Blum to a two year contract. Blum, 37, hit .267 (54-for-202) with 22 runs scored, 10 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs and 22 RBI in 93 games for the Houston Astros last season.

“The signing of Geoff Blum is the first step in identifying how we can improve Kirk Gibson’s options off the bench next season,” General Manger Towers said. “Geoff is a veteran that can play nearly every position on the field while also having the experience of contributing to key situations late in the game as a pinch-hitter off of the bench.”

The next bit of news is that the D-Backs announced that they have named Billy Ryan Assistant General Manager.

Ryan spent the previous three seasons in the Commissioner’s Office for Major League Baseball as the Senior Coordinator of Salary & Contract Administration, acting as a liaison for all 30 clubs with respect to Major League rules, the Basic Agreement and other contractual and industry practices. He also was directly involved with recommendations to clubs regarding the salary arbitration process and signing bonuses related to amateur players selected in the First-Year Player Draft.

“I am delighted to have Billy join our Baseball Operations staff at the D-backs,” Towers said. “He brings an incredible amount of knowledge with him in the areas of salary arbitration and bonus recommendations related to the First-Year Player Draft after working in the Commissioner’s Office.”

Finally D-backs Senior Vice President, Scouting & Player Development Jerry Dipoto announced that Mike Bell has been promoted to Director, Player Development after Rico Brogna resigned from the post he was appointed to last month.

“Mike has earned this opportunity after exhibiting tremendous character, passion, preparation and leadership skills during his tenure in the D-backs’ player development system,” Dipoto said. “He also brings the unique experiences gathered during a lifelong exposure to the game as a member of baseball’s most respected families. We all respect Rico’s decision to resign as Director, Player Development and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

D-Backs remove interm tag from Gibson, retain Dipoto

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that Kirk Gibson has signed a two year deal with the ball club to become the sixth manager in team history. Gibson was named interim manager when former manager AJ Hinch was released from his duties in July of 2010.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to team up with Kirk Gibson,” D-Backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers said in a prepared statement. “I feel Kirk and I share similar values and philosophies about what this organization needs to do to get back to its championship ways.”

The Diamondbacks also announced that they have promoted Jerry Dipoto to Senior Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. Dipoto was named interim General Manager when former General Manager Josh Byrnes was relieved of his duties in July 2010.

“Jerry has been a huge asset to the D-backs and will continue be with this highly deserved promotion in the baseball operations department,” GM Kevin Towers said in a prepared statement. “I am looking forward to spending more time with Jerry and learn more about the organization from him as we work together to improve the club throughout the offseason.”

In other moves today, the Diamondbacks announced that they will retain Matt Williams and Glen Sherlock for Gibson’s coaching staff for the 2011 regular season. Third base coach Joel Youngblood will be taking a position in the D-Backs minor league system while pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr was offered a different position in the D-Backs organization. D-Backs hitting coach Jack Howell and Bench Coach Bo Porter were not retained by the Diamondbacks.

Fox Sports Arizona announces High School Football broadcast schedule.

PHOENIX-Fox Sports Arizona announced their high school football schedule for the upcoming season. Fox Sports Arizona and the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) have teamed up to bring fans 16 games this season. Games (schedule below) will be broadcast on Fox Sports Arizona or for free via FoxSportsArizona.com.

“Our coverage of AIA football adds even more options to our unmatched lineup of local sports programming,” said Mike Connelly, FOX Sports Arizona Senior Vice President & General Manager. “Our partnership with the AIA continues to grow and having games available on FOXSportsArizona.com makes our digital platform even stronger. Phoenix wins WEC event in December

PHOENIX-On August 18th during the broadcast of ‘WEC: Cruz vs. Benavidez’ on Versus, the winner of the ‘Hometown Takedown’, a contest sponsored by AMP Energy drink, was announced.

Getting over 70,000, votes Phoenix will host a ‘World Extreme Cagefighting’ (WEC) event December 16th at the Jobing.com Arena. More details about the event will be announced in the coming days.

D-Backs release design photos of new Spring Training home

SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY (Arizona)-The HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, designers of many world class sports facilities like the new Cowboys Stadium (Irving, Texas), Miller Park (Milwaukee, WI), and the new Glendale Spring Training Facility (Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox), today released design photos for the new Salt River Fields.

July 25th – Dan Haren traded to The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Saunders, two prospects and a player to be named later – The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have acquired left-handed pitchers Joe Saunders and Patrick Corbin, right-handed pitcher Rafael Rodriguez and a player to be named later from the Los Angeles Angels for right-handed pitcher Dan Haren, according to D-backs’ interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

July 30 – P Jackson traded to the Chicago White Sox for Hudson, Holmberg - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have acquired right-handed pitcher Dan Hudson and left-handed pitcher David Holmberg from the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson, according to D-backs’ interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto

July 31 – P Chad Qualls traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for a player to be named later

July 31 – C Chris Snyder, Minor leaguer Pedro Ciriaco and cash to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Carrasco, Church and Crosby.
– The Diamondbacks send Catcher Chris Snyder, Minor League player Pedro Ciriaco and $3 Million Dollars to the Pirates for Pitcher D.J. Carrasco, Infielder Ryan Church and Infielder Bobby Crosby.

When all was said and done, the Diamondbacks unloaded approximately $25 million in salary (according to ESPN.com), received some great prospects in return, and will be in a great position to re-tool their lineup for next season. In the short term, D-backs fans may not like these deals but in the long run, this will help out the club not only on the field but in the stability of their entire organization.

D-Backs Young to participate in tonight’s Home Run Derby

PHOENIX-Tonight in Anaheim, California the eyes of all Major League Baseball fans will be glued to there televisions sets for the Home Run Derby which begins the 2010 All Star Game festivities. Diamondbacks fans will be wanting to tune in as their lone All-Star Game representative, Chris Young, will be participating in the Home Run Derby.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Young said. “No matter what the results are, just to be able to say you were in the Home Run Derby is pretty cool. I am going to go out there and compete and make the best out of it.”

The Home Run Derby begins at 5:00 PM Arizona Time on ESPN.

It’s been a while since we have had some Diamondbacks news hasn’t it?!?!?

Well, one of the reasons why we haven’t had news is that we’re busy behind the scenes building a dedicated Arizona Diamondbacks site for the coming season. We should have the site live within the next couple of weeks.

Anyways….

Spring Training is in Full swing and the D-Backs are in their final year in Tuscon. They will be in Scottsdale next season in a brand new facility.

- On March 3rd, The Arizona Diamondbacks signed 22 year old Justin Upton to a six year $51.25 million dollar contract. According to ESPN, the contract is broken down like this:

…a $1.25 million signing bonus, half on April 15 and the rest on July 15. He receives salaries of $500,000 this year, $4.25 million in 2011, $6.75 million in 2012, $9.75 million in 2013, $14.25 million in 2014 and $14.5 million in 2015.

University of Arizona Football to host Phoenix Area Recruiting Class party tomorrow

Tomorrow (February 4th, 2010) at the Upper Deck Grill in Scottsdale, the University of Arizona will be hosting a National Letter of Intent Day for all alumni in the Greater Phoenix Area. Starting at 6:00 PM alll are invited to attend the no-host reception followed by Wildcats Head Coach Mike Stoops talking about the U of A 2010 Recruiting Class.

After the presentation all U of A alumni are invited to stick around as the UA Young Alumni will be having a viewing party of the Arizona/Washington game at 8:30 PM.

Today was opening day of the NCAA National Letter of Intent for Football and for Arizona State University, it was a great day. As you can see below, ASU addressed many needs, especially on the offensive line.

ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson’s Comments on the Class of 2010

“This was a class that we recruited more for need, particularly junior college. As you look at our football team as it has progressed over the last three years. We’ve been awfully good on defense, as you can see. We’re getting more athletic and faster all the time. We’re a lot better offensively.

As I sat back and looked at our team, where do we have to get better to compete for a Pac-10 Championship next year.

We thought we need a couple junior college offensive linemen, which we did in this class. We need continue to improve our speed and skill at the wide receiver spot and at running back. The class has a lot of depth in it. We probably have more offensive guys than we have recruited in a while. That was our plan coming in, to build the defense and go from there. We fulfilled what we wanted to. We have a heck of good recruiting class. Probably as good as we have had. I’m excited about it. Everybody is. At this time of year, everyone is excited.

We’ve got two players here in Steven Threet and Aaron Pflugrad that were here in fall, that have been here all winter, who are going to add a heck of a lot to our football team. They’re going to make a huge difference to our offensive football team.

George Bell brings a lot to the table as far as speed is concerned. It is a good junior college class.

Brice Schwab is an offensive tackle, probably the best junior college offense lineman that I saw. When they made a change at USC, obviously, we did a good job at getting on top of him. He is 6’8, 320 pounds. We expect him and have an impact right away.

Chris DeArmas is the same way. He is an offensive guard out of El Camino [Junior College], who can come in a give us some depth.

I look at our offense front, we’ve got a lot of young good players. We can add this depth along with Aderious Simmons, a junior college transfer out of El Camino. 6’7. Now to add these [players] to our offense front along with our freshman. We finally have some depth and we’ll be so much better there. That was part of our plan with junior college recruiting and it’s made a difference. We ended up taking six junior college players.”

On Ramon Abreu…

Probably the best high school football in productivity in the Phoenix area, that I’ve seen. Played everything. We’re going to play him at safety to start out with. Everybody looks at his size. When you watch that kid play football, he’s really special. The thing that jumps out at me, he’s been at our camp ever since he was a ninth grader. We’re excited about having him.

On Lee Adams…

Lee Adams is a defensive lineman from Centennial High School. Obviously we have a few players from there. He is a guy that didn’t play much as a junior. He played behind Sutton. But when people started to see him play. People evaluate as juniors. Everyone offers so early. As you watched him continue as a senior and grow physically, he became a heck of a football player. He either be a defensive end or a tackle. I think he’ll grow into a defensive tackle.

On Sil Ajawara…

Offensive lineman out of Rancho Santa Margarita. Kid that has great potential. He was heavily recruited by a lot of different people. He will probably end up playing offensive guard for us, could probably play tackle. He is a guy who has great potential. Probably with what we’ve done, we can bring him in and redshirt. We can do that with a lot of our players, instead of playing them like we have the last three years.

On Kevin Anderson…

Kevin Anderson is a wide receiver out of Lakewood, Calif. He is one of the better receivers out of the state of California. He has great speed. He ran a 10.6 [100 meters] in high school. He has great feet. He has a chance to come in a play for us early.

On George Bell….

I really believe he has a chance to be special. He has great speed. He has great feet. We are very fortunate to get him. He’s got good height. He is a guy who can really help us as far as getting the ball deep. I looked at where we were offensively and made the decision to hire Noel Mazzone as our offense coordinator. He has been unbelievable. A pleasant surprise for me and what we’re going to do. We can gain more speed offensively. This class is going to make a heck of a difference in what we’re going to do.

On Carl Bradford….

Bradford is from Norco High School. He was a fullback but when we looked at him at fullback he was 6’2, 235. They only played him one way. We had him at camp and played him at linebacker. He was a good fullback. We feel like he can be great linebacker. We are taking a guy like that, who is very powerful, and moving him to linebacker, which I’ve done a lot in my career.

On Alden Darby….

Darby is from Long Beach Millikan. He will be corner for us. Kind of a sleeper, although at the end of recruiting he scored very well on his tests, so a lot of people came in on him. We knew about him. We recruited him at the end and he is a very good athlete. He can run and play corner for us.

On Chris DeArmas…

He is from Miami, Fla. He went to junior college at El Camino and sat out a year because of an illness in the family. So he is a little bit older. He is a very good football player and very mature. He’ll help us at guard.

On Jamil Douglas…

He is a guy that reminds me of Finkenberg from Southern California last year. He played tight end. Very good athlete. He is going to end up playing offensive tackle for us as time goes on.

On Eddie Elder….

Eddie Elder is a junior college transfer that is a safety. San Mateo Junior College. One area where we did lose some people at was safety. Although we have some good young safeties coming back that played quite a bit. Because of injury we ended up playing those seniors at the end. Eddie can come in and help us right away. We recruited him out of high school so we know quite a bit about him.

On Josh Fulton…

Josh Fulton is from St. Mary’s High School. He is a tight end who can really run. He is very athletic. He just had shoulder surgery, so he is going to be five, six months with that. We expect him to be ready to go in the fall.

On Taylor Kelly…

Taylor Kelly is a guy I really liked. He is out of Boise, Idaho. Taylor is a guy that led Eagle High School to a state championship. Very athletic. Starter on the basketball team. I had heard about him, so I started watching tape on him. That area is not recruited real heavily. I know the head coach Paul Peterson. We visited. I had a couple people call me. I really studied him. I looked about seven games. Games. Not highlights. Games. To me quarterback highlight films are so over rated. You see all the good plays, not the bad plays. I watched him from start to finish. He is a winner and a great athlete. He is about 6-3, 185 pounds. He has a really good arm. He runs 4.6, which is what they tell me. He makes things happen back there. He won a lot of football games at the end of the game. It may be Boise, Idaho but you still have to win games. I saw him take his team 80 yards at the end of games. He was making plays with either his legs or throwing it to win football games. I was very impressed when I watched him and talked to him and watched him play basketball. I was totally convinced that he was the guy. We were fortunate to get him to change his commitment and come here. I told him upfront, you’re going to be compared to one guy from [Arizona State] when you come here. Just be ready for that. He has no fear. If he can become as good as Jake [Plummer] we’re in pretty good shape. Obviously Jake was his idol growing up.

On Randy Knust:…

Randy Knust is wide receiver out of The Woodlands, Texas. He is obviously from a great football state. He can run. He makes plays. We really liked him. He has good size and catches everything. We’re excited about him.

On Deantre Lewis…

Deantre Lewis, to me, is one of the better guys I’ve been around. If you watch him on tape, this guy is explosive and he can run. We don’t have anyone quite like him at the running back position. I think he has run a 10.6-10.7 [100 yard]. Which is pretty good. He can explode. He gives us that break away speed on offense that I was talking about.

On Jordan McDonald….

To me has a huge upside. He has good height and a good body. He is going to get bigger. He is a very good athlete. He is a guy, that once you get him here for a couple years, he is going to be a very good football player. He could be a great football player. That is the one thing about where we’re at. We don’t have to play these guys right now.

On Kyle Middlebrooks…

Kyle Middlebrooks is another player like Lewis. He is a guy who can play back there [in the running back position] and he can play in the slot. He can play a lot of different places. He is true speed. He a guy that I believe ran a 10.4. He can fly. He is going to be involved in our track program. A lot of those guys say they can but when the track coaches say so, you know they can fly. If you run on this track team you have to be pretty darn fast. He is a great athlete. You can do a lot of different things with him as a receiver.

On Nduka Onyeali…

Junior is a defensive lineman and defensive end, linebacker from Denver. He just jumps out at you when you watch him play. He had got a chance to play for us next year. He can really run. He is not real tall. He is a guy that can make plays. He was very heavily recruited and we’re really excited about him. He is a guy that can play.

On Brice Schwab….

He’s from Pittsburgh. We really think he has a chance to be one of the better players I’ve been around in a long time.

On Aderious Simmons….

He came from Louisiana and was a high school basketball player. He played high school and some junior college basketball and then he ended up at El Camino Junior College. He is a legitimate 6’7, 310. He is an athletic tackle that can pass protect. The biggest thing with him is that he has only played football for three years. He is a guy that will continue to learn while he’s here.

On Devan Spann…

He is a corner out of [Junipero] Serra High School, which is an outstanding private high school in the Los Angeles area. He is also a track star who has done really well. He has great feet.

On Tyler Sulka…

We like him a lot. We look at his upside. As I said, we are able to with the young offensive linemen, we can go ahead and redshirt them and bring them through the program.

On Joita Te’i…

He might be a guy in the class that might be a sleeper. He is 6’4, 260 pounds right now. He started getting pretty heavily recruited at the end. But he is a guy that has great potential. He is a guy that could play defensive end, defensive tackle. He could end up being an offensive lineman before it is all said and done.

On Calvin Tonga…..

This is a big man. He is 6’4, 320 pounds and a big man. He is all of that. You watch him at defensive tackle and he is very athletic. He stays on his feet. He is a guy that could defensive tackle and a one technique over the center and take up a lot space. Or as time goes on, he could end up on the other side of the football. He is a very powerful football player.

On Taylor Walstad…

Unfortuately for Taylor, he was injured for a lot of the season. When we had them at camp we thought he was one of the better prospects in this area.

On Mike Willie…

He is another wide receiver that we talked about out of junior college. We think he can help us get a lot better at a couple things we’re doing. He’ll be here in the fall. When you watch him play, he reminds me a lot of T. J. Houshmandzadeh. Both came from Cerritos Junior College. Very similar, the coaches there compare him to T.J. which is good enough for me.

On Damien Williams…

He is a good running back but I think he is really going to be a good corner. He is 195 pounds. He is a big, physical corner and I really think he is going to be a good athlete out of San Diego.

Cardinals/49ers – Week 1 Report Card

Yeah, Homer Simpson sums up what happened to the Cards today. They lost a damned good defensive and anemic offensive battle to the San Francisco 49ers 20-16.

Here’s how we scored the Cardinals effort in Week 1:

Offensive Line – F – If there was a lower number I could give them it would be either a ‘Y’ or ‘Z’.

Running Backs - Tim Hightower C-/D Beanie Wells – B

Even in his brief performance, Wells did on the field with just seven carries that Hightower couldn’t in his rushing or receiving all game long. Punish the Niners for extra yards after initial tackles.

Hightower may be a good receiving option for the Cards but he’s not very good at rushing. However, he lacks the vision to find the weaknesses in the opposing teams defenses and is afraid to pound the defenses for extra yards. As I said on our Twitter account after the game, Hightower might want to look at tape of Adrian Peterson’s performance today as this is what is expected from NFL running backs when they hit the secondary with the ball. A few more games like this and you just might see Wells as the Starter.

Quarterback/Receivers – No Score – How can Warner and the receiving corps expect to be productive if the Offensive line can’t pick up defenders penetrating to the backfield with ease?

Defense - A-/B+ – Played a near perfect game. Only the mental break down that caused Frank Gore to score unopposed in the 4th quarter along with 5 penalties keep the defense from getting a higher score.

Special Teams – B- Not really a factor like the defense was but they did make some great plays.

Coaching (Defensive) – A+ – Save for the Frank Gore score in the 4th, the play calling was pretty damned impressive.

Coaching (Offensive) – F— Ok, how do you give Larry Fitzgerald only one reception before the end of the first half and not bench Hightower for wussing out when he approaches opponents in the secondary? Sure he had 121 yards receiving but given the other weapons on the field and the fact that Hightower doesn’t know the first thing about trying to gain extra yards when he hits the secondary, most other NFL opponents would leave him open too.

ASU Football Open Practice

Tonight was an open, non-contact practice for the ASU Football team where they went through situational scenarios in full game gear. The Practice was open to the public and after the practice, fans were invited on to the field at Sun Devil Stadium for a meet and greet with all the players on the 2009 squad.

Luis Gonzalez Retirement Night at the D-Backs game/Montgomery Gentry Concert/Post Game Fireworks – This Saturday!!!

The Absolute #1 thing to do this week is on Saturday (August 29th) night at Chase Field.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are literally having a party at the game against the Astros. First Pitch is at 5:10 PM. Now the Diamondbacks have announced that they will be having a Luis Gonzalez appreciation night. The team will honor Gonzo with a pre-game on field ceremony and the first 25,000 fans will also receive a commemorative ‘Gonzo’ T-shirt.

Now here’s the reason why it’s a party.

BREAKING NEWS: Diamondbacks announce location of Phoenix Area Spring Training site

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to partner with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball teams to build a new spring training facility on Community land. It is the first Major League spring training facility in the U.S. to be built on Indian land.

According to the MOU, the SRPMIC will 100% fund, build and run this new facility. The Facility will consist of a two team spring training baseball facility, an 11,000 seat ball park, 12 practice fields, office buildings that will house operations, major and minor league clubhouses and training facilities for both teams.

The SRPMIC and both baseball teams will be working together on the design with HKS Architects. HKS most known projects have been the new Glendale Camelback Ranch spring training facility, and the new Cowboys stadium in Dallas.

“Our ancestors built ball courts on this land and throughout the valley,” said SRPMIC President Diane Enos. “Now we are excited about ‘bringing baseball home’ to our Community. It will add to the enjoyment of our members, Arizona residents and visitors to our state. This multipurpose facility is an ideal match for the vision of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community as we develop land along our western commercial corridor.”

The facility will be located at Indian Bend and Highway 101 and will open in Spring of 2011.

D-Backs Trade Tony Pena to the White Sox for Prospect

In a move that happened not too long ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Pitcher Tony Pena to the Chicago White Sox for first base prospect Brandon Allen. Allen spent time at AA Birmingham and AAA Charlotte combining to hit .281 (85 for 302) with 16 doubles, 3 triples, eight home runs, and 43 RBI.

Allen has been assigned to AAA Reno while the D-Backs will call up a reliver to fill the spot that Pena filled for Tomorrow’s game.

“Primarily as we look at our team, our position players, and try to keep our offense moving forward, we wanted another big left-handed bat to grow with our core, ideally a first baseman,” D-backs general manager Josh Byrnes said.
