AZ Vibe – The Ultimate Phoenix Entertainment Resource

Where Phoenix goes to find out what's really going on!

Archive for August, 2010

TEMPE-On September 17th, 18th, and 19th, Tempe Beach Park will host what is the strongest lineup for a local outdoor music festival fans have seen in recent years.  The 2010 Arizona Fall Frenzy boasts an incredible lineup of a wide range of artists from rock, to alternative, to ear bleeding metal.  We’re going to have a preview of each day of the Arizona Fall Frenzy and we start with the opening day on Friday September 17th.

Even though the first day of the Arizona Fall Frenzy consists of just four bands (Stone Temple Pilots, Shinedown, The Cult, and Sevendust), each of these bands put on amazing shows all on their own.  Put the combined line up of all the bands together and you have the makings of one of the most powerful and diverse local festival lineups to hit the area in a long time.  Three of the four bands (Stone Temple Pilots, Shinedown, and The Cult) will be performing full 90 minute headlining sets. So if you’re worried that only four bands on the first day isn’t worth the money, now you have full justification to see Day 1 of the Arizona Fall Frenzy.

So why come to a festival?

Over the years, I’ve personally been to numerous festivals across the US and Canada in numerous different venues.  The best festival promoters ‘get’ that not only do you have to have a strong lineup but it has to be a diverse one as well.  The reason you come to a festival such as the Arizona Fall Frenzy is not only see bands you like but to be exposed to new bands you have never seen or heard before.

Full Artist Schedule for Day 1 of the Arizona Fall Frenzy – Plan accordingly!

Stone Temple Pilots

STP on: Twitter | Facebook | YouTube

Let’s be honest here, the Stone Temple Pilots were made to play and headline this festival.  When the Stone Tempe Pilots are ‘on’ they put on one of the most powerful and sold live shows in rock music today.  Granted, the band’s storied 17 year career has been marred by some….speed-bumps (for lack of a better sugar coated term).  However, since the band reunited in 2008 (after a five year hiatus), they have picked right up where they left off with their live shows.  They are currently touring behind their self titled new album which was released in May of this year.  I personally have see them live on numerous occasions and they are a model of how bands should perform live in this day and age.

Shinedown

Official Facebook Event for Shinedown’s show at the Arizona Fall Frenzy

Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Shinedown has worked hard to not only build a strong fan-base but have built their music into a must see show.  Led by the double platinum selling “Second Chance” off the platinum selling “The Sound of Madness”, Shinedown’s music has established and reached a fan base that is diverse as they are passionate about the band.

It’s been almost three years since Shinedown entered the studio to record ‘The Sound of Madness’ and the band will find itself on the last few days of the ‘Madness’ tour at the Arizona Fall Frenzy.

When Shinedown first went into the studio to record ‘The Sound of Madness’ lead singer Brent Smith had only one goal “I said, ‘You know what — when I’m dead and gone, when everybody in this band has passed or what have you, I want the world to remember this as a record that needed to be made, and that there was a reason for it,’ “. “That was the motivation behind this album.”

With Smith and Shinedown co-founder Barry Kerch, the band’s new additions to the lineup of Eric Bass…on Bass and guitarist Zach Meyers fans will see the product of the evolution of  ‘The Sound of Madness’ (as well as tracks from their other albums).  From the recording studio in 2007, to starting their tour in 2008 all the way to the end of the tour with their date at the Arizona Fall Frenzy in 2010, Shinedown fans are in store for a treat come September 17th.

The Cult

The Cult on: Twitter | Facebook

Official Facebook Event invite for the Cult’s show at the Arizona Fall Frenzy

The Cult’s roots can be traced all the way back to 1984 where they emerged out of England’s post punk scene.  Starting with their classic ‘Love’ album to ‘Electric’ and the US breakout album ‘Sonic Temple’, The Cult rocketed into the upper echelon of rock super-stardom.  Between 1991 and  2007 The Cult’s super-stardom went on a downward spiral due to infighting, substance abuse, and other factors.  Attempts were made to re-form The Cult between this period.  However, attempts to reform the band were short lived.

Fast forward to 2007.

The Cult reformed with a new lineup of Chris Wyse on bass, John Tempesta on drums, and Mike Dimkitch on rhythm guitar along with long time Cult singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy.  This lineup released ‘Born Into This’ in 2007 and sent a message to the rock world that The Cult was back and better than ever.

In 2009 The Cult launched the ‘LOVE LIVE’ tour which saw them perform their classic album ‘Love’ in its entirety.  With this tour, The Cult seemed revisit their 1984 roots in an attempt to re-establish themselves to the rock world and their fans where they came from and what they are all about.

Sometime this fall, The Cult will release new material in a revolutionary fashion.  Not much is known about this release but from the wording of the press release.  However, it looks as if The Cult is looking to take the next step forward with their career.

Check out The Cult at the Arizona Fall Frenzy. This is a band that is reborn, renewed, and ready to put on a great show!

Sevendust

Official Event invite for Sevendust’s show at the Arizona Fall Frenzy

Sevendust.

What else can you say about the metal band from Atlanta that has built a solid career of music and live shows?

Wait.  You’ve never seen Sevendust live?  Really?!?!?!

How can I best explain the band to the layperson….hmmm….

The Dallas Observer once asked  guitarist John Connelly to explain why their music is called ‘Alternative Metal’.  Connelly replied “I don’t know. I’ve been trying to figure that out. It was back in the day. People, for five minutes called us progressive, and then it was nu-metal. Then, all of a sudden, we were playing alternative metal. We are some kind of heavy and some kind of rock and some kind of metal. I’m not real sure of what title we are carrying this year.”

As I see it, bands either put on great shows or they don’t.  The bands that don’t put on great live shows, tend not to have very long musical careers.  Sevendust, has been going strong since 1994 for a reason.  They put on a GREAT live show.

In addition, fans will be seeing the original lineup for Sevendust at the Arizona Fall Frenzy.  Original member Clint Lowery, who left the band in 2003, rejoined the band in 2008 while touring behind ‘Chapter VII: Hope & Sorrow’.  “It was really cool having Clint back in the band,” vocalist Lajon Witherspoon says. “That energy was great and it was really exciting to be able to work together to really hone in on what we had before and make it even better.”

Sevendust may be the opening act for day one of the Arizona Fall Frenzy but I will say this…they will set the bar very high for the acts that follow for the rest of the day.  Check out the sample videos below.  This is but a slight glimpse into a Sevendust show.

Mickey’s Hangover is back?!?!?

Posted by Editor On August - 30 - 2010

I was out driving last night in Old Town Scottsdale and saw the sign above posted at the now defunct Mickey’s Hangover.

When you go to the website referred to on the sign…

http://whathappenedtomickey.com/

…you can enter your information to what I’m guessing will be an e-mail list about the opening of Mickey’s.  There is also a link near the bottom to apply for a job there.  Phone inquiries to Mickey’s Hangover about the opening were not returned at press time.

Stay tuned for more details….

This week features:

Girl Unit, Mykill, Nth

GIRL UNIT:
Although he was born and bred in the UK, 24-year-old Philip Gamble’s musical passions originate on the American side of the Atlantic. Miami bass, electro, ghettotech, Chicago house, and especially US hip-hop and R&B are all influences, which he then distills into an abstract, 808-driven house template. Gamble began releasing mixes under the name Girl U No Its True in 2006, but only recently started dropping remixes and original productions under the shortened Girl Unit moniker. His I.R.L. EP on Night Slugs has been a staple release for the post-funky set, remixes for C.R.S.T. and Pirate Soundsystem are on the way, and his jaw-dropping and as-yet-unreleased song "Wut" is poised to be a game-changer when it surfaces later this year.

MyKill Bio:

San Francisco dj and producer MyKill has often been cited as "one of the most energetic dj’s in the Bay Area". His passion for music and love of entertaining takes him to different audiences every weekend. Having performed in almost every major club in the Bay Area he has held residencies at various venues such as Trigger, 1015 Folsom, Paradise Lounge, Fahrenheit (SJ), and the Beauty Bar as well as playing signature party nights from the likes of Blow Up, Bootie, Electro Pop Rocks, Glam, and the Academy of Sciences "Nightlife" event. Hailing from Phoenix originally he’s performed all over the Southwest, Mexico, California, and now even holds a current residency in Anchorage, Alaska. Known for playing a wide variety of sounds from Electro to House, Hip Hop, and Club music all seamlessly mixed together with his own signature style and energy. He’s also known to release mixes on a regular basis and received quite a bit of praise on his "Club Killers" series documenting the new marriage of electro and top 40 music.

Nth Bio:
DJ Nth’s (GottaGroove / DTS / DMb /Los Angeles) sound is hard to pin down as he has long been known to wear many different guises as a DJ and play everything from House, Progressive, Trance, Breaks, Disco House, ElectroHouse, and from time to time creatively weave them all together into diverse set. As a former Arizona DJ, he headlined at many events and club nights around the state as well as a long-standing residency at the infamous Kind weekly where he DJed with the world’s top DJs such as: Paul van Dyk, DJ Dan, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Digweed, Max Graham, Sander Kleinenberg, and others.

When I chose to write our series of dating articles, the decision was based on conversations I’ve had with a few female friends of mine along with noting Facebook wall posts of other friends of mine.

All of the conversations and wall posts had a common theme.

Just about everyone had challenges meeting and dating good people in the greater Phoenix Area. There’s a large group of the population in the area that just want to go on dates with other people who aren’t tools, deceptive or fake.

From my experiences living in Phoenix (just about 3 years now) people just don’t get that there are plenty of good women and plenty of good guys here in town that are available for dating.    Many men and women seem to be content to go to places such as clubs or bars to meet members of the opposite sex, while others rely on e-dating sites to find a good match.

These methods may work for some people but, the success rates for a solid relationship tend to be pretty low.

In my opinion, the majority of the people looking to find that ‘special someone’ fail to realize one thing:

You can meet good people anywhere who would potentially be good for dating.

That’s right. Anywhere!

Let me give you some examples:

The Grocery Store – If you’re a guy, strike up a conversation with a lady while shopping.  If things click between the two of you, open up a door in the freezer section then challenge her to a game of hangman. Set up the game board with an open freezer section door using your finger on the condensation that forms from the door being open.

Cultural Festivals – Think about it. Lots of people converging on a central location for a fun afternoon which means you have pretty good odds of meeting someone….if you get out there! Try it at the next Art Festival or big cultural event around town.

Farmer’s Markets – If you live a healthy lifestyle, this would be a great place to meet someone who shares the same lifestyle, don’t you think?

Coffee Shops – It may be a cliche and boring place to go on a date. However, coffee shops are a perfect place for meeting someone. I don’t know how many times I’ve asked people out on dates based on conversations I started in Starbucks.

Gym – The exception to this is when people have their headphones on and they’re working out. That is the universal sign of ‘leave me alone’, if they take them out and leave them off….it’s fair game.

Meetup/Meetin – Before I explain why this is a great place I want to note the following:

THESE ARE NOT DATING SITES!!!

Meetup and Meetin are online social groups that get together for various types of social interactions. Groups are organized by group topic or purpose like ones that are religious, hobbies, social get-togethers. Of course there are Meetup/MeetIN groups for dating but the majority of them are for social get-togethers.

Meetup/Meetin is a great place to meet people and potentially grow a great circle of friends. Who knows? You just might meet someone you would like to date through a friend you made on Meetup/Meetin.

Here’s some examples of Meetup/MeetIN Groups: Solar Advocacy, Volunteering, Rock Climbing, Japanese Speakers, Raw Food Diets, Yoga, and Running.

As stated in our previous dating articles, this is not meant to be the definitive list on where to meet good people that you take out on dates. This article is to help spark ideas for people to break out of their normal habits with the goal of finding that special someone.  You don’t have to hit a home run every time but if you keep at it, chances are you’ll be off the market before you even realize it.

SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY (Arizona)-The HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, designers of many world class sports facilities like the new Cowboys Stadium (Irving, Texas), Miller Park (Milwaukee, WI), and the new Glendale Spring Training Facility (Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox), today released design photos for the new Salt River Fields.

Salt River Fields will be the new Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Avalanche.

The new design photos for the new Salt River Fields have also been uploaded to our Facebook Fan Page:

“We wanted to reinvent the fan experience of spring training by designing a distinctive destination that focuses on fan connectivity to the players while creating a unique environment that embodies the character, values and culture of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks,” said Byron Chambers, director of sports design, HKS Sports & Entertainment Group.

Built on 140 acres of Native American land, Salt River Fields will be leveraged 365 days a year with many and various events, in addition to Spring Training, that will help the area economy immensely.

Here’s some quick stats about Salt River Fields:

  • Opens February 1, 2011
  • Located at Highway 101 and Indian Bend
  • It’s the first spring training facility to be build on Native American land
  • Both the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks will have separate training facilities
  • Features an 11,000 seat central stadium
  • 12 practice fields
  • Parking available for 1,600 vehicles
  • The community theme for the ballpark is ‘Two Teams – Two Tribes – One Home’.  The Two teams are the Diamondbacks and the Rockies.  The Two tribes are the Pima and Maricopa tribes.
  • Will allow fans to watch Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies players practice up close and personal

“This is the most uniquely designed facility in all of baseball,” said D-backs’ President & CEO Derrick Hall. “It exudes friendliness and comfort, which was our intention from the outset. We preach fan-friendliness every day at Chase Field and are proud to know that the same approach will be present at our new spring training complex.”
